It is shown that continuous continuous chips are the cause of unforced equipment stoppage and tool breakage when turning workpieces made of steel groups P and M according to the ISO classification. Continuous chips complicate their transportation and require additional costs during processing. A classification of methods for destroying a coil of continuous chips is given as processes of separation, crushing and breaking. It is established that the destruction of chips as a chip-breaking process is the result of an additional impact on the coil from the obstacles that it encounters on the path of movement after leaving the front surface of the tool. When turning, the obstacles on the path of the coil are the rear surface of the tool, the machined and machined surfaces of the workpiece and the cutting surface. The result of the chip-breaking process is the destruction of continuous chips into single-coil and multi-coil elements. It is proved that the destruction of a turn of chips into single-turn elements is always accompanied by the destruction into multi-turn elements. It is established that the process of chip breaking is carried out according to different schemes depending on the shape of the chip. The necessary conditions for the destruction of a turn of chips are substantiated and its sufficient condition is established. The criteria for the existence of the process of chip breaking are determined.
