Статья посвящена истории развития металлургической промышленности Царства Польского во второй половине XIX в. – начале XX в. Особое внимание уделено вкладу ученых Санкт-Петербургского горного института в процесс технологической модернизации польских металлургических предприятий. Рассмотрены ранние примеры автоматизации промышленного производства, которые способствовали дальнейшему совершенствованию и внедрению этих технологий на польских металлургических предприятиях в последующие десятилетия. Выполнены анализ и систематизация дореволюционной, советской и современной литературы, посвященной истории экономического развития польских земель в составе Российской империи в пореформенный период (1861–1905 гг.). Раскрыты социально-экономические и политические условия использования промышленного потенциала западных земель империи. На основе архивных материалов определены основные направления подготовки профессиональных кадров для металлургической промышленности Царства Польского, подчеркнуты важность замещения иностранных специалистов отечественными горными инженерами и роль Горного института в этом процессе. В результате проведенного исследования удалось установить, что во второй половине XIX в. царское правительство достаточно эффективно использовало горнодобывающую отрасль польских земель, которые по запасам и добыче цинка, серебра, серы и медной руды занимали одно из ведущих мест в мире, а по запасам полиметаллов — в Европе. Важно отметить, что в этот период управление всеми горными делами Царства Польского было передано из Варшавы в Санкт-Петербург, благодаря чему удалось выработать стратегию развития региона на несколько десятилетий вперед. Протекционизм ускорил централизацию капитала и проложил путь монополистическим тенденциям, а существовавшая система правительственных заказов стимулировала рост металлургического производства. Была поставлена задача снизить долю франко-бельгийского и немецкого капитала в польской промышленности. К сожалению, революционные события начала XX в. привели к тому, что многие связи Царства Польского с Российской империей были утрачены. Наметился спад производства. Уже после Первой мировой войны было создано независимое польское государство. При этом вклад российских ученых в развитие польской металлургии не был забыт и активно использовался.
